Artists Know Best: The Supreme Silversmith, Martine Ali

September 4, 2017 by Suedonym Leave a Comment

Forever scouring the “interwebs” looking for inspiration, I’m particularly on the lookout for artists doing the damn thing. I love hearing stories of creatives who managed to make their passion into their life work. Recently I found out about Martine Ali. She caught my interest initially because she has designed jewelry for Kendrick Lamar, however she stocks her creations at Opening Ceremony among others. I’ll get more into that after the jump!

So why is Martine Ali cool? Well for starters, she decided to take her career in her own hands and quit her cushy full-time job at DKNY to do so. As she explained to Coveteur magazine, “I was wearing my own jewelry around the office and the fashion editor saw it, loved it, and then I started doing jewelry for the runway. I did it for a couple of seasons, and then I was like, ‘I’m going to do this for myself.” Although DKNY did help her gain her confidence in going solo. Some of her designs even made it to the runway!

After a few years of steady work and trying to get her name out there, her jewelry landed on the cover of Teen Vogue’s August 2014 issue via singer Kesha’s wrists. Soon after her pieces caught the attention of one of the more outspoken fashionistas, singer Lady Gaga. Such huge exposure got her noticed by the hyper cool retailer Opening Ceremony. Since then her popularity amongst stockiest have grown and as if the floodgates have opened, she now places collections at Sneakerhead Ronnie Fieg’s shop Kith and trendy, minimalist boutique Assembly L.A. and N.Y.

Stylistically teetering the line of goth, minimalist, tomboy and hip-hop, I most certainly dig her pieces. They straddle that aesthetic and I see why people are interested. So interested, that she can add another medal of honor to her list. Since his DAMN project released, Ms. Ali has been blessing rapper Kendrick Lamar with her awesome jewelry pieces and he is making sure they get good ware. I mean, calm girl, you are on a roll. As with everything, her hard work has paid off and her only request as of now is to one day get songstress Rihanna wearing a piece or two.

Can’t get enough of Martine Ali, catch her at the following:

Meet Chef Yujia Hu of Milan’s SakanaSushi Milano restaurant. He’s dope and I’ll tell you why. He satiates not only customers tummy, but his own artistic cravings. How? By creating “Shoeshi” in his spare time. Clever name for some dope kicks, that are edible. You see, Yujia created his own tasty artful incarnations of some of your local sneakerheads favorite kicks. With the assistance of a tooth pick for the details, he has managed to not only touch upon kicks, but also recreate brand logos like The North Face and even popular Manga characters. The names of each ”shoeshi” are a clever, too: adidas “Hu-Giri” and “Nori” NMD, YEEZY “Seaweed Stripes” Zebra, Supreme “Sticky” Sliders. Based in Italy, unless you plan to travel to Milan soon, you’ll be hard pressed to try the delicious treats. However, you can buy image prints online here!

Audio Tattoos: Ink That Makes Noise!

May 23, 2017 by Suedonym Leave a Comment

via 949therock.com

As many of my readers already know, artists always know best. California based tattooist Nate Siggard developed one awesome idea: soundwave tattoos! Basically, he got the idea after adding some ink to his friends who each got a waveform design of British singer Elton John’s song “Tiny Dancer” tattooed. His girlfriend Juliana asked “wouldn’t it be cool if you could play it back?” and Nate realized at this moment, he could make that happen. So, he founded his company Skin Motion, LLC  and is now fully committed to launching his company and making sound wave tattoos possible for everyone. Basically, via an application, one will be able to play any original sound they like via a coinciding tattoo soundwave. This is so special because it could be a unique way to keep sound memories of deceased family and friends. For example, if you had a voicemail from a deceased person, it could remain as a sound tattoo.  Final Word: Gotta love when technology and art meet to create something exceptional.

Urban Decay Links Up with Jean-Michel Basquiat

April 6, 2017 by Suedonym Leave a Comment

Looks like Urban Decay lived up to their name in a sense and got, well, urban with it. They joined forces with the ever-so-popular late artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. His works have garnered a lot of popularity in the last 5 years with collaborations all over the place. Of course, he has no say in the matter and I often wonder how he would have felt about all the collaborations. I’m sure he’d be down for most of it, as he was not stranger to fame already finding it before his departure from this earth. I know I’m not mad at them. The packaging is beautiful and I am def a true fan of visuals. Either way, all my bad and bougie art babe readers will surely appreciate this amazing joint project between the two brands. Final Word: It’s limited edition!

Artists Know Best: Meet 7 Year Old Giana

April 6, 2017 by Suedonym Leave a Comment

So I found out about this little girl and immediately thought, parenting goals! I know that if/when I have a child, I would want to encourage her to be open creatively. Just allow them to be who they are, no holds barred. 7 year old Giana was given such a gift by her parents. This talented little one was encouraged by her parents at an early age to try different mediums, and drawing was the winner. Using old issues of her mother’s Vogue and Harpers Bazaar, Giana used the high fashion images to recreate ads as art. Her work was so intriguing it even piqued the interest of MÊME kidswear, where she launched her first collaborative line of apparel. Now that’s a pretty impressive resume for a 7 year old. She’s a fan of KAWS and proclaims her desire to be a professional artist, but a scientist would work just as well for her. Her pieces shown below are for sale and you can find them here!
