Artists Know Best: Kidrobot’s Sharon Park

July 24, 2017 by Suedonym

via Kidrobot.com

I was recently creeping the interwebs and I came across an article about Sharon Park. It jumped out to me because, one she’s an artist, and two she is a woman making her way through the “Boys Club”. What do I mean by “Boys Club”…well it’s that place in tons of industries that are typically dominated by men. Well, Miss Park is so cool because she chose to look past anything against her and to pursue her designing dreams. Spending most of her days designing some really cute items for Kidrobot, she seems to be living her wildest desires.

In case you didn’t know, Kidrobot was started in 2002 and is a producer and retailer of designer toys, vinyl art toys and collectibles founded by Paul Budnitz. The company specializes in artist-created toys and imports from Japan, Hong Kong, and Europe. I’ve been familiar with them due to my working on the All Gone books and just having fanatic friends into these type of gadgets. However, I never really reflected on the people behind the scenes. It’s very inspiring to know they have a girl present on the team.

A few key pieces I would like to share from the article about her story are the following:

  • Sharon decided to forgo her parents desire of her being a pharmacist to pursue something she loved.
  • Sharon never let her gender deter her from going to school and learning more about the industry she wished to infiltrate. In fact, it empowered her to see it as a an edge and collaborate with the few other women in her class.
  • Sharon always viewed herself as a influencer and visionary. Therefore, she didn’t look at her situation in a negative way.
  • Instead of seeing the field as a sexist place that doesn’t allow women in. She understood that perhaps it’s just a lack of knowledge that one can even work in such a space. Niche fields can typically go overlooked.

I share her story to motivate you, my beautiful readers to pursue what they truly desire to do. No matter what you choose, there will be those who do not understand. It may even make them uncomfortable. That’s alright. Once you make a decision and understand what it is that you want to do, no one can sway you. Stay true to yourself and keep your morals close, because I am sure you can make whatever it is you want to do happen. Miss Park is proof.

Artists Know Best: True Divas

For my birthday I was gifted an amazing present…concert tickets to En Vogue. They were a group I always found to be super talented. They blew my mind with their song “Free Your Mind”, which possessed some of the realest lyrics to date in my humble opinion. Well the R&B divas still got it and I was very pleased.

Typically I am extremely picky about the concerts I attend. I want to ensure a good seat, the talent actually has talent, and that I’ll overall get a good show. These strong, talented, and beautiful ladies did just that. Terry Ellis, Cindy Herron, and Rhona Bennett still looked good as ever and their voices were lovely. On top of that, they have some of the best fans in Paris. The crowd was awesome and the vibe was just love. I truly enjoyed myself and I am so glad I had the opportunity to see these lovely women perform.

They finished the show with their new single “Deja Vu”. It is perfect. Great melody, harmony, and rhythm. Very cute and fits just right for those warm weather days lounging on the beach. You can find the song on most music platforms like iTunes, and Amazon. I suggest everyone reading this take the time give it a listen. Your ears will thank you!

Betta Recognize!

I’m literally glowing inside. The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga is exploring Beyoncé and black womanhood with “Lemonade Week”. Started by English professor James Arnett, the week begins from Monday to Thursday, the university will host daily events to discuss the topics explored on the visual album, such as the “lives, loves and pain of black women.” Well okay than! Homie saw a void and a demand from interested students and supplied that desire in good form. I’m impressed and also happy that people are starting to take notice. Recognition is key, representation is key, recognition is key, and again, representation is key.

I loved the Formation video ever since it dropped. She highlighted issues I could deeply relate to and people took notice. When a celebrity uses their platform to speak on social issues and gives it a face, I always applaud it. As I said before, recognition is key, representation is key and the more we get, the better it will be. Thank you Beyonce for “Lemonade”, it touched a lot of people and came like a crashing wave onto the souls of many. Bravo!

As mentioned in my previous post, people who can and want to make a statement in fashion are. It’s important to make a stand when one can, because people need to see and understand that there is nothing to be afraid of. Hate and all of it’s many forms stem from fear. If someone with the influence and freedom to make a powerful declaration do so, it matters. That’s why it melted my heart and brought feelings of hope when I saw Halima Aden walk in Max Mara, Alberta Ferretti and Yeezy’s shows. Seeing her rock her headscarf to match the many beautiful ensembles made my heart swell. I do know that fashion is trying to appeal to the modest market, so by being inclusive you open yourself up to a whole new world of profit, but the fact that the designer was not scared to take a chance. To actually allow her to be true to her religious beliefs and still be beautiful, was big. Especially during times of Trump presidency and his muslim ban, this was just everything. Final word: hopefully more top names in fashion will help to promote an atmosphere of progressive, open, and tolerant attitudes for all.

Sunlight and Shading Gone Right

February 3, 2017 by Suedonym Leave a Comment

Often people rave about the amazing photos one can obtain when using natural light. This is most certainly the truth. Every time I play up that natural sunlight around dusk, the photos are phenomenal. Take this shot for instance, simply perfect. On top of that, the shadowing is just epic.

Another point I’d love to point out is how easy it is to dress during the summer. I literally am wearing a tank from H&M and this Brixton hat with some shades I found at a tourist shop in Berlin. For me, it looks as though I put a ton of thought into this outfit. Gotta love it!
